If you are thinking to retire in Mexico but do not have a place yet, I can find you a temporary place (address) in Baja North this way you can start with the immigration process ( temporary or permanent residency) right away, later you can do change of address when you rent or purchase your actual home.
The Mexican social security number known as CURP is only granted to Temporary or Permanent Residents. It is required to open a bank account, obtain a tax ID number (RFC), household manifest, driver license and when you sell your home if you do not have it, you will end up paying a lot of taxes on capital gains.
